Ernest Martin Hennings was born in Pennsgrove, New Jersey in 1886. He decided to be an artist during an afternoon visit to the Chicago Art Institute, where he soon enrolled in classes. Hennings' first trip to Taos was made in 1917, at the suggestion of art patron and former Chicago mayor Carter Harrison. Four years later, he moved to Taos permanently and joined the Taos Society of Artists.
