Santa Kateri Tekakwitha 'Retablo' by Carlos Rael
This retablo features the first Native American Saint, Kateri Tekakwitha. It measures 6" high by 3 1//4 in wide and is beautifully detailed.
Rael gathers and processes natural pigments from the earth using minerals, plants and the Cochineal insect. He makes his varnish from the sap of Pinon trees, as was done in Colonial Northern New Mexico.
Rael was born in Santa Fe and is a descendant of Alonso Rael de Aguilar, a member of the De Vargas Force in the re-conquest of Nuevo Mexico in 1692.
