Gustave Baumann was born in Germany and immigrated to Chicago in 1891. He became a preeminent woodcut artist, winning the gold medal for printmaking at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. Baumann moved to New Mexico in 1918 and settled in Santa Fe where he lived the remainder of his life.
