The Fechin House Before Fechin
Originally from the Netherlands, Dr. Jan Jacobus and Wilhelmina "Mien" Bergmans moved to Taos in October 1915, where he succeeded Dr. Allison (La Revista de Taos, October 22, 1915.) They moved to what would become the Fechin property around August 20, 1919 (Taos Valley News, August 26, 1919.) On February 3, 1920, Taos Valley News also reported, "Dr. and Mrs. Bergmans will soon start building a new home (now the Fechin House) at the front of their existing home. It will be a two-story building with 6 or 7 rooms and artistically sound. Of course, the house will be in style with the construction method as is practiced in the South West." They returned to the Netherlands in 1927 after selling their property to Nicolai Fechin.
We're grateful to Carel la Verge, a relative of Dr. Jan Jacobus and Wilhelmina "Mien" Bergmans, for providing information about the family and their time in Taos.
